PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) or acid blockers are not intended for long term use.
PPIs were not studied for long term treatment of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) only for a 4-8 week treatment of gastric ulcers.
Long term use can result in the body producing excess stomach acid as the body builds a tolerance to the PPI.
During and after PPI use, stomach acid becomes less acidic and may result in poor digestion and decrease the ability to suppress microorganisms such as H. Pylori.
Long term use of PPIs increase the risk of:
- Pneumonia
- Anemia
- Malnutrition
- Osteoporosis
- PPI Polyps
